Legos & Lagers 2017 Recap

October 21, 2017 by Sammy Selfling

Lego cars displayed at Legos & Lagers 2017 Fundraiser for Selfling Teen Support FoundationWell, if you were to ask Selfling founder James Higgins what our first fundraiser was going to be like 2 hours BEFORE Legos & Lagers 2017, he probably wouldn’t know what to say. This was totally new territory for us!

Yet, as our crew of hard-working volunteers were busy setting out door prizes and containers of Lego for our contestants, it all seemed to come together. Our guests started to file in, raffle tickets started to disappear, we even sold some our bracelets and AMP chargers!

The Toad & Turtle Barlow in northeast Calgary proved to be a fantastic host, giving us ample room for tons of construction.

As our teams busied themselves with their models, each one checking its drivability on the Legos & Lagers ramp, even the servers started building their own model!

Game of Fury Road put fury on wheels to burn up the Speed ramp
Taking one Orc down the Speed Ramp, Team Thumper’s Ride used simplicity in their build
Design winners Team Discovery Channel were recently contracted by Elon Musk to build his private starship
Team Brick Addicts – not the biggest but definitely the fastest, you can tell by the look on the pilot’s face!
Team Buck Twenty Five and The Monkey of Death – by Red Iron Labs – took ballistic weapons to the race.
Team Sandwiches & More took inspiration from Mad Max: Fury Road. To great effect.

Our 6 teams did not take long setting in on their Lego Racers. It quickly appeared that we had people from many different disciplines vying for the big prize. Each team took to their Racer with a different idea of what would get the most distance.

Yet it wasn’t just about performance. Team models were also judged on appearance.

After all the building was done, our judges, Brad and Cece, got in to have a look. The big winner for the best design was Team Discovery Channel!

Team Brick Addicts won the night… and nearly crashed into the far wall. Enjoy the brewery tour, guys!

In the end, Team Brick Addicts won by a wide margin. Their car traveled down the Legos & Lagers Speed Ramp and stopped just shy of the furthest wall. This told us a lot about what makes the best practical Lego Racer. As you could see from the gallery, Team Brick Addicts did not build either the longest nor the heaviest Racer.

It’s all about balance.

Team Brick Addicts’ ingenuity won them the coveted prize for longest distance: The Toolshed Brewery prize pack. Along with the snapback hat and beer pail, they have a free brewery tour and tasting for ten people!

Our contestants and a couple of the Toad & Turtle team members managed to walk away with some great prizes as well!

We want to give big thanks to all those who donated prizes for Legos & Lagers:

  • Neurvana Health
  • Reg’s Auto Service
  • Pink Lime Salon
  • Toolshed Brewery
  • Flying Squirrel Air Park
  • Monster Mini Golf
  • R&R With Jorja
  • Hippo Hug
  • Down to Earth Creations & Wellness

and last but not least, the acclaimed Calgary photographer, Neil Zeller.

This was an amazing night and our donors really came through with some fantastic prizes.

Our volunteers deserve some of their own special praise as well. Thanks to our Legos & Lagers team for giving your time to our fundraiser!

  • Jorja & Kim (Lego sortation and raffle tickets)
  • Brad and Cece (Lego sortation and judging)
  • Victoria and Shauna (Lego station and photography)
  • Lorraine Mckenzie (Lego sortation and ramp testing)

We think Legos & Lagers was a big success. In the end, we were able to book two Selfling team members in for some much-needed training. Who would have thought that a night playing with Lego would make such an impact?

Just as a reminder, the training our contestants and prize donors helped us to provide is Safe Talk and ASIST. Safe Talk and ASIST are very important tools used in the event a teen using the Selfling Teen Support App is in crisis. In a crisis, there is a correct way to respond and this training helps us do that. We could not have done it without the support of our Lego Racer teams and the local businesses and anonymous donors who provided us with prizes!

We can’t wait to do this again. From the sounds of it, neither can our contestants! It would be great to hear from all of them again, and hopefully, we might get even more teams!

Will you join us next year?

Legos & Lagers 2017

August 14, 2017 by Sammy Selfling

Legos & Lagers fundraising posterWe are so pumped to announce – finally – our first ever fundraiser!

It’s called Legos & Lagers and it is a Lego building competition being held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Toad & Turtle Barlow.

We were looking for fun new things to do for our friends in Calgary that could also get some support and we came up with a night where we could all get together and build Legos roadsters and zip them down a ramp and across the room. This will be great for anyone into Lego or not into Lego. It’s a great venue, for a good cause, and there are prizes!

We are circling something big for the grand prize, so stay tuned for that.

Be a Kid Again, Come Play with Lego

Essentially, what Legos & Lagers is all about is to help us pay to train some volunteers in ASIST and Mental Health First Aid. ASIST training is Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training and it is very important for people who may end up engaging with someone who might be suicidal. Mental Health First Aid is important because it helps a person aid someone else who may be suffering from a mental illness related episode. The Selfling App is fine and good but it does need to be safe and we have discovered that training volunteers to see what is happening on the app – and being trained to handle some content they might discover – is the best way to do that.

At the Legos & Lagers event, up to 25 pairs of 2 will have around an hour and a half to build a Lego roadster that will then be judged on its design. After the judging, all roadsters will take a zip down the Selfling Speed Ramp to see who travels the farthest. Points are tallied up from the judging and from the distance. The team with the highest combined score wins our grand prize!

We will also have door prizes available and all of those will start to pop up here and on the Selfling Facebook page.

We would love to see you at Legos & Lagers 2017, so why don’t you follow on over to this Eventbrite page we made?

GUESS WHO’S GOING TO TECHSTOCK 2017

July 4, 2017 by James Higgins

Teckstock 2017, Driving Change. Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Alastair Ross Technology Centre, hosted by Innovate CalgaryNo really, guess…

No?

Okay fine. WE ARE!

What is TECHSTOCK?

TECHSTOCK is a yearly technology showcase held in Calgary at the Alastair Ross Centre and hosted by Innovate Calgary. Last year’s theme was all about games and the Innovate Calgary team were all dressed as video game characters. We remember being very mesmerized by a 3D printer – totes on the Christmas List. Jus’ sayin’.

So this year’s theme is “Driving Change – Social Impact through Innovation”. Innovate Calgary is showcasing the impact of technology and social innovations in areas like health and education, sustainability, and gender equality.

As many of you friends may know, Selfling falls right into that category and, well, Innovate Calgary agrees!

We would be ecstatic to see some of you visit us at TECHSTOCK 2017. Specifics are below!

We will be giving you more updates on our features for the afternoon as they come! Thank you to Innovate Calgary for this amazing opportunity!

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CAR?

June 30, 2017 by Sammy Selfling

The Selfling Mobile is on the road now, everybody, and that means fun for Calgary’s teens!

Selfling Mobile 2014 Hyundai Veloster

If you see the Selfling Mobile – the 2014 Hyundai Veloster with Selfling Sam emblazoned on the doors – then snap a selfie with the car and share it on social. We are taking in gifts of tickets and passes to events around Calgary and the first teen (sorry adults, 12 to 19 only) who sends us a pic of the Selfling Mobile will win the contest and take home that pass!

Real quick-like, we are NOT going to compete with Kids Up Front on the collecting tickets. We are good friends with Kids Up Front and totally support what they’re doing. We always suggest you taking the tickets you can’t use to Kids Up Front, in fact here’s how you get your tickets to them!

Donate To Kids Up Front

The Spot the Car and Win contest is our way of getting awareness out into the world about the importance of teen support. If you want to give us a couple movie tickets or a gift certificate – or TICKETS TO THE STAMPEDE! – we will take them and line them up for the next contest. We are hoping to run one each month if we can.

This week we have 1 Stampede Super Pass! We will be driving about Calgary waiting for a teen to tag us in a picture of the Selfling Mobile so we can give that teen a great Stampede Week!

So, without further ado, get out there with your hawk eyes and watch for the Selfling Mobile! We better get driving!

♥
