Selfling Teen Support Foundation
Bridging The Gap. Bringing Support. Inspiring Confidence.
The Selfling Teen Support Foundation
Selfling is a brand new Canadian agency that is dedicated to bridging the gap between teens and the vital services that they need to guide them, protect them, mentor and advocate for them.
Agencies like ConnecTeen, Kids Help Phone, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, and others fight every day to reach vulnerable youth and give them valuable support for issues like mental health, bullying, abuse, trauma, and peer pressure. Yet, somehow, so many teens are left wandering, anxious, and alone without anyone to talk to them or guide them.
The Selfling Teen Support Foundation was founded to help spread the reach by creating a new networking system where teens can meet and engage with the providers of these incredibly vital services.
3 Fundamentals of Selfling
As a youth, you will have questions. On the Selfling Teen Support App, teen support agencies are available to help you find the answers.

3 Membership Levels
senseiThe Sensei are people who work or volunteer with teens. They have advice, experience, and they can make getting help - from the SPOT Society or other Selflings - seem not so scary. The Sensei moderate the Selfling community to make sure that everyone is safe and that everyone can be heard.
selflingSelflings are the teens who we built this app for. Selfling is a teen's utility belt. Together with the SPOT Society, the Sensei, and Selfling peers, teens can find support, heal, gain confidence, and realize their true potential. Selflings will help each other as well as be helped, gain experience, and become confident adults with a strong network that has helped them along the way.

The SPOT Society are the agencies that work with and offer services to teens. They help the app admins understand how the app serves teens best. The app is intended to increase reach and make it easier for teens to reach out to these very agencies.
Selfling’s Commitment to Online Safety
The development of the Selfling app was taken very seriously. We understand that the internet can be a dangerous place and we wanted to do everything we could to stop those threats from entering the Selfling network. We have taken some significant steps to curb the risk and to help teens make some better informed choices about how they interact with others online.
Selfling is in the very initial stages but with further development, with the support of Calgary's business community, Selfling can explore many new and novel approaches to online and social networking safety.
Step 1. Build a chat app that teens believe they belong in.
A teen should feel comfortable using Selfling and confident that there are people and agencies on the app that want to see them excel and grow. This confidence can make a teen less willing to put up with bullying or any other victimization whether on the Selfling app or another platform.
Step 2. Talk with teens about internet safety
We will talk with teens, not at them and always keep them wise about what kinds of content could be troublesome and what content can be helpful. Trying to involve them in discussions about them is a much better way to get them to think seriously about the subject of their safety. For example, be careful about what pictures you post and don't give away your location!
Step 3. How to spot a predator
Part of the Selfling Teen Support Foundation's mission to inform and support them is to let them know some behaviours to watch for in the event someone signs up who should not have. This is not a subject anyone wants to talk about, but having that discussion with our teens is essential so they can start making safer and wiser decisions.
Step 4. A new way to deal with bullies
It is easy to pigeonhole a bully as a monster but, in truth, many of them are just as hurt and confused as the kids they pick on. Bullying, victimization, and abuse on the Selfling network will not be tolerated. Bullies will find their accounts greatly restricted - or even deleted - but we don't want to leave anyone in the cold. We want to give them the option whether to work through it. We will try to encourage more aggressive members to contact our SPOT agencies or their Sensei for some guidance.
Step 5. Verify all SPOT Society Applicants
All applicants to the SPOT Society will be individually verified by Selfling admin. This will require, at a minimum, verifying the presence of a website, phoning or visiting the agency in person, and even checking references. Some agencies will have enough of a reputation that this may not be necessary but the verification is also to ensure someone is not hiding under that agency's name.
Step 6. Verify all Sensei Applicants
All applicants to the Sensei membership level will be required to register in association with a SPOT Society agency. We will then verify that this member is in fact associated with that agency, so we encourage interested agencies to appoint their Sensei beforehand.
This may seem extreme, but we would rather put dedicated volunteers through processes that they are already expected than risk the safety of our Selflings.
Taking Every Precaution
The Selfling app is designed to be a safe and constructive place for teens to go for support and advice. This means dealing with a great deal of vulnerability and that is something we do not take for granted.
We have checked every box that we could to ensure teen safety on the app. Getting to the center of what matters to teens and teaching them simple tools to protect those matters is an essential step and one that we are prepared to make.
We will continue to invite our teens to meet us and talk about the subject of safety and support and that is how Selfling becomes the safe environment that teens depend on.
The Selfling Teen Support App is a combination of memories of our youth, cutting edge technology, and the desire to change the landscape. The developers of the Selfling Teen Support App, Calgary's own App Guys, know how hard it can be trying to grow up. Discovering your identity, making your folks proud, keeping up marks. That's hard enough. Many youth have it harder than that.
Selfling supports today's teens by giving improved access to all the resources and agencies available to them in one slick package. It is an application whose development could not have waited any longer. Whether you're a teen, a parent, a teacher, or you're employed with a youth services agency, you know what growing up is like.
Supporting The Selfling Teen Support Foundation is supporting teen empowerment.
